Breast implant replacement

Breast implant replacement

Breast implant replacement is the surgical procedure to remove previously placed implants and replace them with new ones. It is indicated to:

  • Update and refine the desired aesthetic outcome
  • Change the volume, shape, or type of implant
  • Resolve capsular contracture
  • Replace aging or damaged implants
  • Correct implant malposition
  • Address evolving personal and aesthetic preferences

Modern breast implants are designed for long durability, but they are not permanent devices: periodic check-ups over time are essential. Replacement is planned individually to guarantee a natural and harmonious outcome.

The journey

Stages of the treatment

During the consultation, the surgeon assesses the current condition of the breasts and implants through clinical examination and diagnostic imaging (breast ultrasound or MRI). The type of current implant, its position, and any capsule alterations are analyzed.

Selection of new implants: based on expectations and body proportions, the shape (round or anatomical), volume, and profile of the implant are selected.

Adjunctive techniques: if necessary, the procedure can be combined with capsulectomy, corrective lipofilling, or mastopexy to optimize results.

  • Duration: 1 – 2 hours
  • Anesthesia: general
  • Day surgery: yes (outpatient procedure without overnight stay)

Whenever possible, existing scars are used to access the implant. The previous implant is removed and the new one inserted, with treatment of the periprosthetic capsule if indicated.

Recovery is generally faster than after the primary surgery. Wearing a supportive compression bra and observing a short period of rest are required.

  • Resumption of light activities: approximately 7 days
  • Full recovery: 2–3 weeks
