Harmonious and proportionate ears

Otoplasty is the plastic surgery procedure that corrects the position, shape, and size of the auricle. It is indicated for:

  • Protruding (‘bat’) ears
  • Asymmetry between the two ears
  • Hypertrophic auricular concha
  • Absence of natural cartilage folds (antihelix)
  • Outcomes of trauma or congenital deformities

The procedure has a significant psychological impact, especially in school-age children, and can be performed both in pediatric patients (from 6-7 years of age) and in adulthood.

The journey

Stages of the treatment

The shape and position of the auricle, symmetry, and the patient’s aesthetic goals are evaluated. The most suitable technique is planned.

Pre-operative tests: blood chemistry panel, ECG, anesthesiological consultation.

  • Duration: 1 – 2 hours
  • Anesthesia: local with sedation (general in children)
  • Hospitalization: day hospital

The incision is placed in the retroauricular groove, behind the ear, making it virtually invisible. The cartilage is reshaped to achieve the correct position.

An elastic headband is required day and night for 7-10 days, and then only at night for another 3-4 weeks.

  • Suture removal: 7–10 days
  • Return to social activities: 7–10 days
  • Sports activities: after 3–4 weeks
